Would anyone consider this series steampunk?
I only got through about 4 of the 13 books of the series (mostly because it was the same plot recycled each time), and I'm not expert on steampunk per se, but it may warrant some consideration.
There's definitely a Dickensian element to it (orphans, people with funny and prophetic names, unstoppably evil characters, constant peril, grotesque contraptions) which makes the reader think it makes take place in the 19th century or before. And yet, in this seemingly pre-modern world, there are cars, airplanes, electric elevators, etc., which may lead the reader to think the series could take place as early as the mid 20th century. In short, anachronisms abound!
Just a half-formed thought. Anyone else?
