Electricity Frederick E. Laurenzo
Victorian England produced the basic theories that explained the phenomenon of electricity. 1831: Michael Faraday discovered electromagnetic induction 1873: James Clerk Maxwell publicized a coherent field theory, which explained electricity, magnetism, and optics in a series of equations 1897: Joseph Thomson discovered the electron Britain still lagged behind the US and the Continent in the application of electric power. 1897: Charles Parsons invented the steam turbine which provided the connection between coal and electricity and became the 20th Century’s power source.
Engineering R.A. Buchannan
The engineering profession emerged in Britain in the 18th Century when men like John Smeaton (1724-1792) began to describe themselves as “civil engineers.” Engineering, the art of making and building, itself goes back to antiquity. Engineers developed rapidly in the Industrial revolution due to the demand for railways. 1818: Institution of Civil Engineers is founded and received a royal charter in 1828. 1847: Institution of Mechanical Engineers is founded in response to the Institution of Civil Engineers not taking adequate care of it’s members during the railway boom. During the second half of the century engineers became anonymous workers and heroic age of Engineering became part of the past.
